The Turkey Tango!
The Upper School seniors and Lotspeich second graders ushered in the winter holiday season, kicking off Thanksgiving Break on Nov. 21 with the Turkey Tango, during the Lotspeich and Upper School assembly. Under the direction of music teacher Robin Wilson, the second graders first danced alone then concluded the dance alongside the seniors in Kalnow Gym. Lotspeich students shared what they were thankful for. Vashti Rutledge, from the Madisonville Education & Assistance Center, thanked everyone for taking part in the food drive. Head of Lotspeich Susan Miller thanked the school community for a fun day and wished everyone a happy Thanksgiving Break.

Assembly with Guest Speaker Trent Emeneker
In honor of Veterans Day and Diwali, first through fifth grade students learned about the two holidays during the Monday morning assembly. Seven Hills parent and Marine veteran Trent Emeneker spoke to the students about his time in active duty, as well as what it means to be in the reserves. Emeneker also discussed boot camp, flight school, and what it was like to fly aircrafts over the ocean. After Emeneker, Head of Lotspeich Susan Miller talked about Diwali’s history and significance.

Seventh graders read solar system books to first graders
In mid-November, seventh graders from science teacher Kristin Suer’s class read handmade solar system books to Lotspeich first graders. The seventh graders worked in groups to research and design their books based on their choice of planet for their Unit 2 project. Students could base the book on the planet itself or as a setting for their story. The leaders of each group presented the books to their peers, as well as to Lotspeich students. The fascinated first graders asked questions about the celestial bodies, discussed their favorite planets with the Middle School students, and, if they volunteered to, practiced their pronunciation while reading aloud.

Cincinnati Zoo penguins journey to Lotspeich
On Nov. 15, first graders gathered around a clear plastic enclosure in the After the Bell classroom to meet their new penguin guests from the Cincinnati Zoo! With wide smiles and excited eyes, students calmly waved to their new friends and learned the differences between penguins living in the wild versus at the zoo. The zoologists also explained the penguins’ unique feathers, and how they repel water and insulate the flightless birds. After the presentation, students asked about their habitats, diet, personality quirks, and more!

Third Grade visits Sunwatch Village
On Nov. 20, third graders visited SunWatch Indian Village in Dayton, Ohio, to learn about archeological excavations. Students reconstructed pottery, learned how to grind maize by hand, and explored the open-air museum. The reconstructed village the students toured featured five lath and daub structures with grass thatch roofs, portions of a stockade, and a native garden and prairie with plants typical to the period.
