Seven Hills Welcomes Danish students, teachers

Spearheaded by Upper School English teacher Caleb Paull, Seven Hills welcomed eight students and six teachers from Høje-Taastrup Gymnasium in Taastrup, Denmark. The students and teachers stayed with host families and attended Upper School classes in the morning. On their first school day, the Danish students gave a presentation about their school and answered questions from Upper Schoolers during lunch. In the afternoons, they explored Cincinnati, visited local museums, went to a Cincinnati Cyclones game, and learned to play fowling, a combination of football and bowling.

Upper School Students share Personal Challenge Projects

Scattered throughout the Upper School, students shared their Personal Challenge Projects ranging in topics from creating an art camp to beekeeping to creating an encyclopedia of dinosaurs. “The Challenge Project requires students to completely own and direct a piece of their educational experience and to face and overcome challenges in pursuit of their unique objectives,” said Director of Experiential Learning Karen Glum. Personal Challenge projects are a graduation requirement and students get to pick the topics and what the project will entail. “Always, students grow from these experiences. Often, students grow in ways they could not have foreseen,” Glum said.

Upper Schoolers compete in math competitions

Four Upper School students qualified for the Ohio High School Mathematics Invitational Olympiad on Nov. 5. Seniors Jerry Hou, Rohan Nambiar, and Kyler Pang and junior Mikel Wyer competed in multiple events, including a ciphering competition. For the final event, each student was grouped with three others from different schools and had to complete 10 problems in 21 minutes, submitting an answer every two minutes. Wyer’s team took third place. On Nov. 10, Hou, Nambair, Pang, Wyer, and 14 other Upper School students took the AMC, a math competition with 25 questions that must be completed in 75 minutes. Congrats to freshman Abhinav Chandra; sophomores Ethan Hu, Ahalya Nambiar, Sydney Schneider, Keliang Yao, and Andrew Zhou; juniors Michelle Hu, Leon Li, and Oliver Szabo, and seniors Shanaya Bharucha, Jade Morse, and Jack Ringel. “The math department believes that critical thinking and problem solving are important components of a mathematical education, so the AMC is a great way for students to practice these skills in a competition setting,” said Upper School math teacher Sarah Mullan. Students who perform high enough on the AMC will advance to the American Invitational Mathematics Examination.

Senior gets perfect ACT score

Congratulations to senior Erin Finn for getting a perfect score on her ACT test. “That Erin earned a 36 on her ACT is no big surprise. But to be honest, I’d say that the 36 on her ACT is the least of her very impressive accomplishments,” said Upper School College Counselor Beth Driehaus. Finn is the co-founder of Tutor Teens, an online tutoring company that has clients from more than 100 local schools. It attracted national media attention and is the official tutoring partner for students in the Cincinnati Reds Academy. Finn recently applied for a matching grant and is looking to make Tutor Teens scalable beyond Cincinnati. In addition to Finn, six Upper School seniors got perfect SAT math scores and 25 percent of Upper Schoolers who took the ACT got a perfect score in one or more sections.
