Seven Hills Welcomes French students
The Seven Hills community welcomed 35 exchange students from La Croix Blanche, a high school in Bondues, France, from Oct. 15-25. Each paired with an Upper School student, the French students researched Cincinnati history, learned how to play American football, and visited classes. With their host families, the students tasted local delicacies, craved pumpkins, attended BLINK, went on a tour of the FOX19 studios, and visited pumpkin patches. The Upper School students will be going to France in May.

Alumni Share Career Tips at Panel
Gabe Davis ’03, Max Gollobin ’09, Mary Taliaferro ’09, and Kalpana Kotagal ’95 took part in the Alumni Career Panel for Upper School students during lunch on Oct. 18. The panel was moderated by senior Anna Papakirk. The alumni gave advice on picking a major, deciding when it was the right time for graduate or law school, and determining if is time for a career change. “Even the people you perceive as being the most successful, they had help along the way. If people are willing to help, take the opportunity and reach out to them,” Gollobin said. Taliaferro added that the strength of the Seven Hills alumni community is a great place to find mentorship.

Drama of photosynthesis
Students in Bryce Carlson’s AP biology class dramatically performed the plays they wrote detailing the enzymatic processes of photosynthesis. One group demonstrated the cycle metaphorically with the adventures of some cookies, including Cookie Monster and an electron Uber driver. Another acted out “the challenges and tribulations of life through the microscopic realm of the cell,” where electrons fought to complete an epic journey and a lovers’ quarrel took place within the Calvin cycle.

Lunch and Learn covers diversity in corporate America
The World Languages Department hosted guest speaker Jacqueline Aguilar, who has worked at Proctor & Gamble since 2013, to talk about the importance of Hispanic and Latino representation in America to Upper School students in the Young Family Library during lunch. “I am sharing this information because you are going to be the future leaders. I am sharing this so you have an understanding of those who might not be from your community,” Aguilar told the students. She outlined the contributions Hispanic and Latino people have made throughout American history dating back to the 1600s and to the modern economy. Though they make up a significant portion of the consumer market and are the largest growing workforce, they are underrepresented in media representation and in the corporate sector. She stressed the importance of having inclusivity in the workplace and gave the students advice on how to create it.

Freshmen Debate in Athenian Assembly
Ninth grade students in Laura Leonard’s world history class debated as members of the Athenian Assembly. Students, each with assumed ancient Greek identities, including occupations and political affiliations, gave speeches before the assembly on what Athens should do about the continued threat of military action from Persia. Speakers demonstrated their knowledge of the material and their public speaking skills. The class then debated over setting up an alliance of city-states, how power and decision making would be distributed, and what would be the best ways to get Sparta to join.
