Doherty Day of Service

March 10, 2025

Doherty students make braided dog toys from T-shirts with art teacher Kacey Watkins.

The Doherty Hives took part in a Doherty Day of Service. Doherty students partnered with Save the Animals Foundation, a volunteer-run, no-kill shelter for dogs and cats, located near the Hillsdale Campus.

Unit III students reported on their field trip to STAF, where they helped clean, made cat toys, and spent time with the animals. The Day of Service started with Doherty students making braided dog toys out of old T-shirts for the dogs at STAF with the help of parents, teachers, and Upper School volunteers.

Based on instructions from art teacher Kacey Watkins, students drew cats and dogs on thank you cards for STAF to send their volunteers.

The activities continued with a Read-a-Thon that had students visit four themed reading rooms. Students read with their Hives members in the dark with flashlights, around a campfire, and to the stuffed cats and dogs.
