Hands-on Learning in World Languages

March 10, 2025

With crepe flipping and Menina making, Upper School world language teachers are incorporating hands-on learning into their instruction.

Students in Michele Laude’s French classes made crepes for La Chandeleur, a French holiday held in early February. The students practiced flipping the crepes while holding a coin in their left hands to bring good luck and prosperity for the new year.

As part of their study of Spanish art, students in Teresa Bardon’s advanced topics: Spanish 5 class learned about artist Diego Velazquez and “Las Meninas,” one of the most iconic paintings in Spanish history.

The students explored the historical context of the painting and discussed the role it holds in modern society by examining the annual exhibition of “Modern Meninas” held in Madrid.

Students designed and painted their own Menina, drawing from their childhood, culture, and aspirations. The paintings  were hung around the Upper School and included a QR to recorded explanations by the students of their Menina in English and Spanish.
